ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Classic rock radio station KBFX-FM 100.5 "The Fox" has posted an apology on its website and disc jockeys Greg Wood and Chris Wilcox have been suspended without pay, all stemming from a derogatory statement regarding Alaska Native women, made last week on the air.

Some in the community say such comments didn't begin on "the Fox," though.

The fallout from the comments continues. The Alaska Native Heritage Center on Tuesday suspended indefinitely its advertising contracts with Clear Channel, the parent company of KBFX.

The heritage center says it can't support derogatory comments against Alaska Native women -- comments it believes are already prevalent in the community.

Even more shocking than what Woody and Wilcox said on air, though, is that many Alaska Native women don't find the derogatory comments that shocking at all.

Michelle Davis heard the remarks, which came during their morning radio show on April 9.

"The one guy says, ‘Well, you are real Alaskan if you have made love on the Yukon River and you have peed in a Native woman," she said.

The heritage center's vice president of operations says the comments, though not uncommon, are detrimental.

"It is not uncommon. That is disconcerting, for particularly our young people, and people of the community to listen to because it certainly is not a community builder. It's a community divider," Debra Call said.

Such comments are not limited to the Woody and Wilcox Show. Across town, the competition at KWHL-FM 106.5 "The Whale" makes easy fodder of Alaska Natives during early-morning humor on the "Bob and Mark Show."

The DJs make mockery of Native language and customs and also poke fun at dental care issues in the Bush.

Bob Lester and Mark Colazecchio also play a bit called, "That's what I call Native." And, they say, it's all done in the name of entertainment.

"I see it a lot in the media," said Kiatcha Benson with Healing Racism in Anchorage.

"Bob and Mark Show" producer Brad Stennet declined an on-camera interview but did say the two DJs have been in the Anchorage market a very long time and, he says, know not to cross certain lines.

But just where is this line? And who decides when it's been crossed?

"The definition that we go with is, loosely, prejudice and stereotypes coupled with people in a position of power," Benson said.

Woody and Wilcox have been suspended indefinitely and are said to be undergoing sensitivity training, leaving most of the city to tune in to Bob and Mark during the morning commute.

Though all of the radio jocks have demonstrated an on-air "gift for gab," none of them are willing to talk candidly off-the-air and for the press about the current controversy.

That silence may ultimately leave many Alaskans to figure out themselves what exactly makes the DJs so funny.

The Alaska Native Heritage Center and Healing Racism in Anchorage both offer cultural awareness training.

There is no word yet on if or when Woody and Wilcox will return to the air. As for the "Bob and Mark Show", their producer says they don't want to be dragged into all of this and they will continue their show as is.

LOL

I say,

Say or Do what You want, but you've got to be willing to be part of the solutions for theProblem,

or at least have some viable options after making fun of some problem or of something,

Natives see humor in everything often from theViewPoint of Growing up and always standing in line for something from theGov't,

from growing up and seeing much Violence, hopelessness & despair all around and putting a funny spin on "something" just to get by,

I could go on, but I won't.

Personally, I don't think theJocks words were insulting, It's true that most Natives don't think of such things as insulting, 'Most' I said, Most....

but some do.

I've heard much worse from Sober people out in theVillage!!
Even I was butt of many jokes out in theVillage!! when I was VPSO, *shrugs* Wink

Oh well!!
You need thick skin to be up here in Alaska anyway!!

Though I don't think ShockJocks words were insulting,
they were Insensitive,

I'd have to ask how were these Men IRL / in real life!?
was theSchtick just part of their morning show?! - like I believe theBAMMWS / theBobandMark men without shame show IS!!

You have to take all things into consideration and not just 30seconds of Glib over theAirWaves,

And ST / "sensitivity" training won't change anything, at least imho,

Besides,

theBigger Issues about theSafety of Women & Children in general really belong to theState!!

and it's theState that has to Also, Answer for their Glib-ness, or their answers to everyone, at least imho,

And that answering also includes some very personal things regarding me,
like,

Why was I passed over for 5 of the last 8 yrs I've applied to StateTroopers!?
and why was I not kept within theVPSO program ?! etc.

If theState really wants Manpower and people in uniform, like they cry about NOT having enough Of, then they'll relax some hiring standards, and in general just change some standards here and there,

and keep theOverall Mission Statement of AST and help keep theSafety of our Alaskan Women (everyone overall) and children!! in mind too.

I think theShock remarks are a non issue,
and life will go on,

But if people want to get in a tizzy about it,
then, we all need to do something POSITIVE about it and make big changes,

As I said,
I for one, see such problems within theState regarding our Native population and that theState needs to get off it's "WhitePower" / Whites Only in power high horse and come down off the mountain,

and get me back into uniform again,
I'm not the only Officer / person that's been screwed over by their Village & by theState,

But still,

"we" want to help in ways we know how,
It's issues that "we" have, that just show you how fucked up this overall situation really is about issues between Whites, Natives, Blacks,

Maybe this public "Flap!!" is a good thing to get people to really think about things, that some of us have been facing, fighting and trying to change all along!!

You'll find me on AlaskaVillageTales!! where at end of this year 2008,
I'll start taking down some previous blogs and make room for New materials,

Cos, the 5 year mark for keeping official state records, at least for me, ends Oct 2008.

I'll start to tell my experiences and I will name certain people too that I have dealt with over the years as VPSO & afterwards,

theShockJock remarks may no longer shock,

maybe it's because of the examples of our State Leaders and past leaders treatment of theAlaskaNatives that made things this way.

luvs,
theSam!!
